How the first rose was created
The goddess of flowers, Chloris, was walking throught the woods one day enjoying her creations, when she stumbled over the lifeless body of a beautiful nymph, who was so lovely that the goddess wanted to change her into a flower. As she knelt beside the lifeless form she wondered what cruel fate could have caused the nymph to perish in the dappled shade of the tall young trees, her slender fingers twisted around the grasses and delicate flowers that grew there. She asked her fellow-gods for help. Aphrodite gave the nymph, the gift of beauty; Dionysus, god of wine, gave her nectar for fragrance; Three Graces gave her charm, joy, and brilliance; Zephyrus, the west wind, blew the clouds away so that Apollo, the sun god, could shine on the flower. The end result took the immortals' breath away: they crowned it the Queen of Flowers, and called it a "rose".
The legend of the Birth of Venus tells us that at the same time as the goddess sprang from the ocean waves, the handsome Pallas Athene was created out of the head of Zeus. Cybele, the Earth goddess, was outraged that she had not so far managed to create such beauty, so in retaliation she made a tiny flower bud, hoping to surpass these two immortal masterpieces. When the gods of Olympus saw the rosebud they smiled, and watered it with nectar. Slowly it opened to be链接e the first rose, and even Zeus had to admit that it far outshone the handsome Athene and the beautiful Aphrodite.
